Maritime tragedy leads to reforged links Thursday, 24th August 2006
Uncovering the story of a tragedy at sea in which many Armagh people drowned has led to the re-establishment of links between Forkhill and a town in Eastern Ontario in Canada. Some of the passengers from the Forkhill area who survived the sinking of the Hannah in 1849 settled in the town of North Crosby and it was from there that Paddy Murphy decided to investigate papers belonging to his great uncle Robert Kane. These led him to Forkhill and the Mullaghabawn Community Centre, and to Kevin Murphy and Una Walsh, who have written a book entitled "A Famine Link - The Hannah". In the near future steps will be taken to initiate a twinning arrangement between Forkhill and North Crosby.
